Levity Did I lose something, always looking back? I guess I relied on some unkind stories, but they’re in the past, let it go again. Watch the rain falling, every droplet is displaced. Is it a sign or is there no rhyme, or reason for it, I don’t know but I’ve been searching. And in this solitude where I’ve learned to dream, I awake at night as the shore recedes. In a little boat bashing on the reef, praying for some levity. I though I saw your face, somewhere looking past. I can’t believe all we have seen, it’s slipping through our silence and the space between us. And I wanna say I’ll forgive myself in time. I know I’m just afraid, to let go of the need to redeemed. And in this solitude where I’ve learned to dream, I awake at night as the shore recedes. In a little boat bashing on the reef, praying for some levity. I wanna know which way is out, I wanna shake my former self, I wanna scream at time “alright, I’ve lost the fight.” And in this solitude where I’ve learned to dream, I awake at night as the shore recedes, in a little boat crashing on the reef, praying for some levity.

Dreaming wake me back to life Willing, but my hands are tied Don’t you think I know that freedom lies beyond this conversation Wishing I could show the life we’d live without your reservations It’s for the best, it’s for the best, give it a rest, give it a rest I see you licking the bottom of the bowl Don’t be so desperate, you gotta let it go Don’t you think I know that, all arrivals are just temporary Hoping I can show that this departure is not yours to carry It’s for the best, give it a rest Love abandoned, they call it tragedy Written so clearly, it’s not what it’s supposed to be Don’t you think I know that freedom dies without imagination Asking you to show me, how you’ve learned to balance that equation It’s for the best, give it a rest Can’t be living a half-full life without a promise, drifting in the endless sea Can’t we take the glass of time, and turn it over, grab the slate and wipe it clean It’s for the best, give it a rest We just come from different sets of circumstances

Rejection Therapy Tried to forget that departing was easy, oh well, I don’t mind Tried to forget that your absence is healing, oh what, I tried Now I have so much peace of mind when I woke up I was sober Bright lit, blue skies Now I have so much peace of mind, I woke up without a struggle till we stirred desire Tried to forget, but it’s slowly returning, funny that I’m back to the start Of a bet, I don’t know us at all... I can already see us, at the ocean, in a version of who we are So enticing, it invites me there to find So inviting, discover if I, wandering souls, brings us back so we can love where we were. But I can just barely see us, as we hover, in a version of who were, so inviting In an ordinary voice, that’s falling, falling, falling Don’t linger til your happiness gets lost, cutting you away I’m trying to forget, every instinct for leaving, buried it every time Tried to forget, the image concealing the loss that we lived in. How you have so much peace of mind, never to claim any closure — we drift all night. How you have so much peace of mind, how can we slip back in comfort with our love reprised. Tried to forget, but it’s slowly returning, funny but I’m back to the start of a bet I don’t know us at all... I can already see us, at the ocean, in a version of who we are So enticing, I’m invited there to find So inviting, discover if I, wandering so, brings us back so, we can love where we are. But I can already see us, as we hover, in a version of who were So inviting, in an ordinary voice, that’s falling, falling, falling Don’t linger til your happiness gets lost, cutting you away I’m trying

about

Levity is a collaborative EP with three of my favorite singers who I am lucky to also count as friends. I recorded each song at the same small cellar-sized project studio in the LES of Manhattan called Rivington 66. I sent instrumental recordings to each singer, including a little fragment of a vocal phrase and lyrics to help catalyze their creation. “Levity" was written with Sarah K. Pedinotti, an amazing musician and singer in NYC. She has a phenomenal band called LIP TALK and is also very active in other projects such as Kalbells and Okkervil River. "For The Best" was co-written by Angelica Bess, an amazing singer, also part of Kalbells, who has collaborated with a plethora of artists such as Chrome Sparks and Machinedrum, and has a long standing band called Body Language. I sent Angelica the instrumental, where I was trying to evoke the irreverent optimism of the 90's, with a subtle nod to New Radicals, but mostly aping the synth palette of UK Jungle legend Goldie. Immediately Angelica had the hook figured out and the rest of the song came together effortlessly. "Rejection Therapy" was written with my old friend Sandu-Ndu who is part of the singular and excellent Oakland based band, Bells Atlas. Sandu and Bells Atlas' drummer Geneva Harrison were in NYC a few years ago and we made time to record some music. Sandu has a very unique and evocative approach to singing and I think this is a wonderful representation of her ethereal magic. I really enjoy collaboration and try to draw from a wide array of influences, This EP is a little glimpse into the lyrical and timbral world of Trivial Shields.
